Podrían producirse cambios para los habitantes de Arkansas que reciben Medicaid. La gobernadora Sarah Huckabee Sanders propone agregar requisitos laborales para algunos beneficiarios de Medicaid. Se impusieron reglas similares en el estado en 2018, pero luego fueron anuladas por la administración Biden. Neil Sealy, de Arkansas Community Organizations, dice que más de 18 mil personas perdieron la cobertura hace siete años a pesar de que estaban trabajando o se les habían concedido exenciones.

"Nos comunicamos con personas para hablar con ellas sobre su experiencia. Había un requisito de presentación de informes, y si después de tres meses no se había presentado, se le retiraba," expresó Sealy.

Argumenta que algunos beneficiarios no sabían que no tenían cobertura hasta que intentaron ir al médico. Sanders tiene la esperanza de que los requisitos sigan vigentes bajo la nueva administración Trump.

Según un informe de la revista Forbes, Arkansas es el cuarto estado menos saludable del país. Alrededor de 820 mil habitantes de Arkansas tienen Medicaid. No se han publicado detalles específicos sobre la propuesta de Sanders, pero ella explica que quiere un requisito más amplio que cubra a los adultos sanos. Sealy agrega que sus voluntarios ya se están movilizando.

"Nos preparamos. Nos estamos acercando a la gente de la comunidad. Estaremos en las puertas, hablando en las iglesias, preparándonos. No nos sentamos y lo aceptamos," insistió además Sealy.

Un estudio de Harvard muestra que en 2018 los requisitos laborales no redujeron el desempleo y que la burocracia y el papeleo crearon serios obstáculos para las personas que eran elegibles para la cobertura.
