Doctora en Utah comparte información útil para prevenir los ataques cerebrales

Mayo es el mes nacional de concientización de los derrames cerebrales, y expertos en Utah quieren asegurarse de que la gente sepa cómo prevenirlos o detectar señales de advertencia.

La Dra. Veronica Moreno-Gomez es una neuróloga de accidentes cerebrovasculares en Utah. Ella dice que por varios factores de riesgo como presión alta, niveles altos de colesterol, fumar, obesidad y diabetes - la población hispana puede ser más propensa a los derrames.

Es por eso que ella quiere que todos sepan la sigla RÁPIDO que significa: Rostro caído, Alteración del equilibrio, Pérdida de fuerza, Impedimento visual, Dificultad para hablar y Obtenga ayuda rápido. Adiciona que las personas pueden ser proactivas en sus propios hogares.

"Si comemos de una manera saludable, si hacemos ejercicio regularmente, si nos tomamos las medicinas, si vamos al doctor o chequeamos en nuestras casas la presion arterial, el azucar - creo que si cambiamos ciertos habitos, podemos reducir el riesgo que tenemos."

Estadísticas del American Heart Association proyectan que millones de adultos en los Estados Unidos sufrirán un ataque cerebral. Pero cifras muestran que las mujeres hispanas pueden ser más susceptibles a los ataques o derrames cerebrales por varias condiciones como los embarazos, el consumo de medicinas anticonceptivas y la fibrilación auricular.

Moreno-Gomez dice que las posibilidades de sobrevivir y evitar daño permanente mejoran si las personas reaccionan rápidamente.

Moreno-Gomez también expresa que se trata de informar a la población hispana de una manera que sea efectiva y equitativa. Lo cual es importante para un estado como Utah que está pasando por un aumento gradual en el número de personas hispanas.

"No todos tenemos acceso a los sistemas de salud y hay muchas disparidades en la prevención de todas estas enfermedades."

Moreno-Gomez agrega que la información es poder. Comenta que si las personas saben cuándo deben de estar preocupadas, pueden tomar las acciones necesarias para mantenerse fuera de peligro.
