Survey Says: Better Prices for Prescriptions, Please

February 21, 2007

Buy in bulk, and usually, things are cheaper. It's a business practice that 86% of Americans would like to see the U.S. adopt for the Medicare prescription program, according to a new AARP survey. Congress is looking at allowing bulk buys and negotiation for Medicare meds. Right now, the practice is banned.

Joe Gallegos, with AARP Idaho, says prescription price breaks are needed now more than ever.

"The prices of prescription drugs continues to increase and this is an attempt to bring the prices down."

Gallegos says medication prices continue to rise at unacceptable rates; more than double the level of inflation.

The U.S. House has already approved negotiating and the Senate will vote soon. The pharmaceutical industry is against the practice, saying open market competition is the best way to set consumer prices.
