FRANKFORT, Ky. - It's a party with a global purpose: fighting climate change. Kentucky residents from east to west will roll up their sleeves Sunday, 10.10.10, to show their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Dozens of Kentucky volunteers, like Wallace McMullen, will install solar panels, plant trees, weatherize old buildings, work in community gardens and pick up trash - all to send a strong message to policymakers, he says.

"We're celebrating and creating climate solutions. And, hopefully, sending our leaders a clear message, 'We're getting to work, what about you?'"

Volunteer Connie Lemley, a member of the Frankfort Climate Action Network, is gearing up for Sunday's event, too. She says folks in the state's capital city will tidy up the town's walking and biking trails. Lemley says the climate connection to recreational trails and community gardening is often overlooked.

"If there are safe and easy and attractive ways for people to be able to walk and bike around Frankfort, then it's easier to leave your car home. The community gardens offer a really great opportunity for people who don't have large yards to grow some of their own food locally."

Lemley says some electric cooperatives are joining conservationists in advancing climate solutions by holding demonstrations about solar energy. She says one of the big 10.10.10 projects in Kentucky is the groundbreaking for a passive solar Habitat for Humanity house in Morehead.

"Being able to provide energy efficient housing for people of low- and middle-income makes a lot of sense - especially in a state like Kentucky, where we know that energy prices are going to rise and that the people who are least able to pay their energy bills now are going to be hit very hard."

Organizers say more than 7,000 events are expected to take place in 188 countries for the "10.10.10 Global Work Party," the single largest carbon-cutting day of action in history. Residents in Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Carlisle, Leitchfield, Morehead and Shelbyville have RSVP'd.

Event information is available at www.350.org.
