Open Enrollment Soon for Medicare Part “D” Plans

November 10, 2010

SIOUX FALLS, S. D. - The enrollment period for Medicare "Part D" prescription plans opens November 15, and South Dakota seniors should take some time and review their options. Cathy McLeer with AARP South Dakota says plans and prescriptions change a bit every year.

"It's really important for them to compare the cost, the coverage and the quality of those plans. And also make sure that the plan that they are enrolling in, or that they are currently enrolled in, still meets their medical needs for the coming year. If it doesn't, this is a really good opportunity for them to review other plans and see if there's something that meets their needs a bit better in the coming year."

About 135,000 people are eligible for Medicare coverage in South Dakota this year. McLeer says there are still a number of plans available to senior citizens.

"This year in South Dakota, there are 30 plans, which is a few less than there were in previous years, so it is really important for individuals to make sure that their plan is still being offered, or to just do a basic review and make sure that the plan they are in still meets their needs for the coming year."

She suggests seniors looking for help or advice on their prescription options turn to family or friends, or their county extension agent, for assistance. The open enrollment period is November 15 to December 31.
