Popularity of Same-Day Registration is No Guarantee in MT

April 12, 2007

Same-day voter registration proved popular last fall, but that's not stopping attempts to kill it. The law is credited with bringing thousands more to the polls, and a Senate committee has voted down the latest try to do away with it, but that may not be the final decision. Jeanne-Marie Souvigney with Montana Conservation Voters says it’s time to put together a plan on how to fix misunderstandings and the problem of long lines.

"It was very popular. There were a lot of patient election administrators and patient voters. We should try to make it work better in the future."

More than 4,000 people registered to vote on Election Day. Those who want to do away with the law say they’re afraid it could lead to voter fraud. Wyoming and Idaho have had same-day registration at the polls for several years.

Souvigney believes the state should be doing all it can to encourage eligible voters to cast their ballots, and same-day registration motivates citizens from all walks of life…

"Some of these were people who never would have voted otherwise. Some were people who just moved to the state, or to a different county in Montana, or to a new precinct, but they all wanted to vote."
