Many folks will be mailing in last-minute income tax returns today, and at several post offices around the state, members of the group Iowans for Sensible Priorities will be on hand to let taxpayers know just where their money is going. Spokesman Dave Stone says it may be a surprise to many Iowans.

"The average person assumes when they pay their taxes that it's going to feed poor children, cover healthcare, veterans' benefits, senior citizens. That's where people assume their taxes are going. In reality, it's almost the opposite."

Stone notes that roughly 40 cents out of every dollar Iowans pay in federal taxes this year will be spent on the Pentagon.

"The average Iowan family will contribute over $3,600 in federal taxes this year. More than one-third of those funds will go toward the Pentagon. Not to pay for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but just to pay the everyday operating budget of the Pentagon."

Stone says even though the Cold War has been over for decades, a lot of Pentagon money is going to weapons to fight the next generation of Soviet fighter jets and submarines. He believes it's time we start spending on other programs that contribute to national security.
