Idaho Schools Celebrate Reading with Green Eggs and Blue Fish

March 1, 2012

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho - Striped hats and green eggs are the themes in Idaho public schools around the state this week. Students are delving into Dr. Seuss this week for "Read Across America," an National Education Association event that coincides with Dr. Seuss' birthday on Friday. The annual event involves many schools, families and the community to promote the love of reading.

Kim Dinsmore, a second-grade teacher at Valley View Elementary, Bonners Ferry, adds technology to the traditional reading list - and not just to explore "The Cat in the Hat," she says.

"I have one iPad that my kids just love. We use it throughout the day - it rotates through the students - with specific apps they use to target their weaknesses."

She recently won a grant to add more tablets to her classroom, which children can use with a parent's consent. Dinsmore has also participated in the Boise State University GameLab project and designed an educational computer game for her students.

Dinsmore says the programs on the iPad are customized for each child, and she receives reports on their progress so she can make adjustments.

"It depends on what they need to focus on - it could be phonics, or reading, or something in math. They're all very specific."

The National Education Association created Read Across America in 1998 as a way to encourage kids to read.
