Los Floridanos presionan para incrementar el Salario Mínimo Federal

MIAMI – El Martes, Miami se unirá a docenas de otras ciudades de todo el país que realizarán protestas, marchas y otros eventos con el fin de obtener apoyo para presionar al Congreso a que suba el salario mínimo.

Habrá cientos de personas en el Parque Bayfront para mostrar su inconformidad con el salario mínimo, y su apoyo a una iniciativa que plantea subirlo. Actualmente se pagan $7.67 por hora en Florida, – pero si se hubiera ajustado a la inflación, pasaría de los 10 dólares por hora. Eric Brakken, director en Florida del sindicato laboral 32BJ SEIU, dice que ya es tiempo de que los políticos nos presten atención, en especial durante este año electoral.

“Vienen y nos piden que los apoyemos con nuestro voto durante estos tiempos económicos difíciles; tienen que darnos soluciones para reconstruir la clase media. Para lograrlo es esencial incrementar el salario mínimo.”

Brakken dice que incrementar el salario mínimo federal a 10 dólares significaría unos 100 dólares adicionales por semana para las personas que trabajan por hora. El salario mínimo ha sido aumentado únicamene tres veces en los últimos 30 años. En comparación, las compensaciones de los ejecutivos subieron 23 por ciento tan solo en el último año, de acuerdo a los reportes de Equilar, una compañía que estudia las compensaciones ejecutivas.

Brakken señala que el dinero que ganan los trabajadores de cuello azul en el país entra a circular casi inmediatamente a la economía.

“Cuando se incrementa el sueldo a los trabajadores de bajos ingresos, no llevan su dinero a una institución financiera fuera del país. Van y pagan su renta. Van y compran su comida. Van y llevan a sus hijos al doctor.”

La manifestación de este martes será en el centro del distrito financiero de Miami. Es uno de docenas de mítines que se han organizado en todo el país. El más reciente proyecto de la ley HR 5901, que busca incrementar el salario mínimo, fue introducida el mes pasado. Alcee Hastings, Congresista de Florida es uno de los promotores de la iniciativa.
