DENVER – A muchos coloradeños les sorprenderá este mayor acceso a sus expedientes médicos; los defensores del paciente dicen que usar esos expedientes es vital para asegurar la calidad en la atención. La defensora del paciente, Regina Holliday, dice que hoy en día los médicos hacen malabares para atender una intensa carga de pacientes, por lo que la gente debe asumir un papel activo en su salud. Ella lo llama “medicina participativa”.

“Tener acceso puede hacer la diferencia entre tener un buen resultado o tener un resultado muy, muy malo... tener un buen final en su vida o tener uno que sea desdichado.”

Durante el último año la mayoría de las instalaciones médicas de Colorado han migrado hacia un sistema electrónico de archivos, con dólares federales. Holliday opina que, al aceptar ese apoyo, las instituciones están obligadas por ley a permitir a los pacientes el acceso a sus expedientes en un lapso no mayor a cuatro días. Holliday se volvió defensora de los pacientes luego de que a su difunto esposo le diagnosticaron cáncer en la cuarta etapa. Ella viaja por todo el país enseñando lo que aprendió. Holliday opina que si hubiera tenido acceso al historial de su esposo, y hubiera tomado una segunda opinión médica, el resultado habría sido diferente.

“Sí, él podría estar vivo hoy porque podría haber recibido el protocolo de tratamiento que le hubiera salvado, pero desafortunadamente no teníamos ese tipo de acceso, así que no sólo murió, sino que murió mal.”
