La medida de una madre: unos hijos sanos y seguros

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ser mamá es uno de los trabajos más importantes del mundo, pero no todos los días serán un éxito y los expertos en paternidad dicen que la mayoría de las madres deben espabilarse y mantenerse enfocadas en el panorama completo: criar hijos que estén realmente sanos y conectados.

Mientras las familias de todo el estado se preparan para celebrar el Día de la Madre el próximo domingo, se recuerda a las mamás que no se juzguen tan severamente. Karen Walant, terapeuta familiar, dice que aunque muchas luchan por el ideal de la “Súper Mamá” –perfecta de todo a todo–, la verdad es que no existe el nivel de “absolutamente correcta”.

“Hay las que yo llamo ‘pequeñas victorias’. Sólo está cada momento particular y ‘¿Cómo estuvo esa interacción?’ Y luego la próxima interacción, y la otra, siempre construyendo, construyendo y construyendo el vínculo básico. Ya sabes, no existe la perfección. Todos estamos en proceso. Todos estamos aprendiendo.”

Walant asegura que de cuando en cuando las mamás deben darse un tiempo para cuidarse ellas mismas y saber que está bien buscar a alguien cuando necesitan ayuda.

Walant dice que la mejor medida de una madre es criar hijos saludables, seguros y alegres, para que puedan desarrollar su potencial en la vida.

“Lo que realmente quiero destacar es que se trata de una relación de toda la vida, ojalá que llena de seguridad, para que nuestros hijos –no importa de qué edad– puedan sentir siempre que pueden incluirnos en sus vidas, convivir con nosotras y sentirse apoyados por nosotras.”

Además de trabajar con familias, Walant está en la mesa directiva de la organización Paternidad Internacional con Cariño (Attachment Parenting International).
