El aprendizaje de verano evita la “sequía de cerebros”

Cientos de estudiantes y defensores de la juventud de todo California están en el Capitolio Estatal este lunes y martes para exigir a los congresistas que apoyen los programas de aprendizaje veraniego de alta calidad y que aumenten los fondos destinados a todo el ciclo escolar.

Y es que, aunque las vacaciones de verano se acercan rápido para muchos jóvenes estudiantes de California, eso no significa que el aprendizaje deba detenerse. Los expertos opinan que es importante que los niños sigan aprendiendo, para evitar que sus cerebros se "sequen." Habla Jeniffer Peck, quien encabeza la Campaña "Summer Matters."

"Lo sabemos ahora por una intensa investigación sobre un fenómeno llamado 'pérdida veraniega del aprendizaje,' por el que especialmente los niños de bajos ingresos, académicamente pierden mucho terreno en el verano, factor que deja un vacío en los logros."

Peck agrega que la pérdida de aprendizaje en verano se acumula -cada verano el alumno experimenta que estos vacíos le retrasan más y más, y que no puede ponerse al día.

La investigación arrojó que si bien los programas de la "escuela de verano" tradicional pueden llegar a sentirse como un castigo, los que están diseñados para ser interactivos y divertidos, hacen una diferencia enorme.

"Hay muchas cosas creativas y divertidas que puedes hacer con la lectura," comenta Peck, "las matemáticas y las ciencias durante el verano, que no tienen que ser aburridas, no tienen que estar sentados en escritorios."

Los defensores reunidos en el Capitolio también instan a los legisladores a que apoyen la ley SB 1221, que aumentaría los fondos para los programas escolares de verano.

"La ley haría algunos cambios en la manera en que California distribuye sus dólares para programas post-verano, así que ponemos más dinero en la programación del verano. Esa es una de las muchas formas en que podemos tener más programas de verano para los muchachos de California."

Jenniffer Peck es también Directora Ejecutiva de la Partnership for Childhood and Youth (Asociación para la Niñez y la Juventud).
