LANSING, Mich. - From how to afford long-term care to financial security in retirement, Michigan voters have big questions for the candidates in next month's midterm election, and one nonpartisan organization wants to help connect them with the answers.

AARP Michigan has just released its 2014 voter guide, focused on the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and the Michigan governor's race.

Melissa Sieffert, associate state director of government affairs for AARP Michigan, says the guide lets voters see what candidates have said - and not said - about the issues, in their own words.

"We searched for various publications where the candidates may have talked about issues pertaining to Social Security and Medicare," she says, "as well what's going on with the economy."

Seiffert adds that AARP does not support, oppose or give money to any candidates for any elected office. The voters' guide can be found at the AARP website, with specific districts searchable by zip code.

The guide also allows voters to hear what the candidates for governor had to say when asked specifically about caregiving, retirement, the state budget, and uniform guardianship laws. Seiffert says voters of all ages are concerned about their future, which, she says, is why AARP Michigan works to cut through the clutter.

"All we have is our 1.4 million members and our voice," she says. "So our voter guides are very important in educating members on the various issues that pertain to them as they age."

According to Seiffert, an estimated 60 percent of the Michigan electorate turning out to the polls next month will be 50 and older.

AARP Michigan will also be hosting a gubernatorial debate on Sunday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m., which will be broadcast on public television stations around the state.
