Seattle, WA – Varios grupos han estado recolectando firmas para votar una medida que elevaría el salario mínimo en Washington a $13.50 por hora, en 2020.

La Iniciativa 1433 cuenta con el apoyo de los sindicatos laborales y asociaciones educativas de Washington, y recientemente recibió la aprobación de los candidatos presidenciales Hillary Clinton y Bernie Sanders.

Teresa Mosqueda, directora de política y estrategia de campaña en el Consejo del Trabajo del Estado de Washington (Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO), dice que los negocios pequeños verán el beneficio de que los trabajadores tengan más dinero para gastar.

“Una vez que esté plenamente aprobada, veremos una inyección de $2.5 billones de dólares –billones, con B– a las economías locales de todo el Estado de Washington, anualmente.”

Quienes se oponen a la medida están preocupados de que un incremento del suelo mínimo signifique tener que subir los precios. Sin embargo, Mosqueda afirma que los estudios de anteriores aumentos al salario no han mostrado que esto resulte en mayores costos. El sueldo actual en Washington es de $9.47 por hora.

La propuesta también permitiría a los empleados recibir pago hasta por siete días de ausencia por enfermedad, incluyendo un subsidio para el cuidado de los cónyuges y los miembros de la familia inmediata. Mosqueda dice que la subvención es importante para más de un millón de trabajadores de Washington que no tienen a su disposición pensión alguna.

Se trata de que tienes o no tienes la posibilidad de tomarte un día libre en el trabajo porque tú o tu hijo están enfermos, sin el miedo de perder tu empleo o sin la consecuencia de que no se te pague ese día.

Las leyes de ausencia por enfermedad aparecen en la legislación de cinco estados más, incluyendo Oregon y California. La iniciativa necesita unas 250 mil firmas para julio, para que pueda ser votada.
