Rallies Statewide Today: Fix Health Care Now!

July 8, 2008

West Palm Beach, FL - Delaying treatment of a medical issue only makes it worse. That's why a new coalition says it's time to stop procrastinating when it comes to fixing the health care system. Rallies are being held across Florida today to kick off the new effort.

Laura Goodhue with Florida Community Health Action Information Network says the blueprint builds on a basic idea. CHAIN is a statewide consumer health care organization promoting sustainable access to health care for all.

"Health care should be accessible to all. Every American should have a right to affordable, quality health care."

Goodhue says businesses, labor groups, medical care providers and others are joining in a partnership to demand action on health care reform. Their proposal includes setting up an alternate health coverage system for people who can't afford traditional health insurance through their employers, need coverage for pre-existing conditions, or are unhappy with their current coverage.

Goodhue explains that the new national option would also have standard pricing, something lacking in the current system.

"These are things that we should be able to achieve. The cost of health care shouldn't be dependent upon how many employees a business has."

Critics argue the plan would create unfair competition for traditional insurance companies, and encourage employers to drop their coverage.
