Recovery Month Wraps Up Success in Arizona

September 30, 2008

Phoenix, AZ – A diagnosis of alcohol or drug addiction is not the end of the line. That has been the hopeful message of "Recovery Month," which comes to a close today in Arizona.

Emily Jenkins, with the Arizona Council of Human Service Providers says the month has been full of inspiring stories of recovery and success. She laments that people with addictions are often written off as lost causes, when in fact, they need to hear that recovery is possible.

"People get better, and they get their lives back - or they create good lives, where they had no real, good life before."

Dwight Bocage says he's living proof of that. In Tucson, Bocage counsels people in recovery, and celebrates his own success in battling addictions – which he discovered were connected to emotional issues that he learned to control.

"The thing that I found that helped me was putting myself in a position of learning. I needed people to help me understand what was going on with me, because I didn't know."

And Phoenix resident Josh Ross became addicted while in his teens. He found recovery in his early 20s, however, when he learned that treatment providers really cared about him and wanted him to succeed.

"They gave me a design for living that enabled me to live life without drugs."

Jenkins says "Recovery Month" is a salute to the hard work of people battling addictions, and treatment providers who guide the way - every day of every month. More information on "Recovery Month" is available at www.recoverymonth.gov
