Portland, OR – Oregon is second only to California for the number of ways the state is working to save energy. A new scorecard, from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), ranks every state on how much its utility companies, businesses and state government are doing to promote energy efficiency.

The ratings take such things into account as a state's building codes, tax breaks, and policies for land use and transportation. Kim Drury, policy analyst for the Northwest Energy Coalition, says Oregon's covering all the bases better than most states.

"Oregon's tax incentive program for energy conservation and renewables is the envy of Washington State. They also have a program that helps pay for additional energy conservation, on consumers' utility bills, plus a really strong energy code. These guys in Oregon rock when it comes to energy conservation!"

Drury says much of the push for conservation has been focused on fighting global warming, but an unstable U.S. economy has made it important for financial reasons, too.

"Right now, one of the most solid financial investments that a business or an individual consumer can make is in energy conservation, because it actually does pay back over time. It's a really solid way to save your money."

On the ACEEE scorecard, each state could receive a maximum of 50 points. Oregon's score was 37, just 3.5 points shy of top-ranked California. The report also says in the past year, Oregon created 1,240 new jobs and saved $48 million worth of energy through greater efficiency.

The full report by state can be viewed online at www.aceee.org.
