Boise, Idaho – Eventually, it will happen; trust your child to take the lead; and never punish if there's a mistake. That's the expert advice in a nutshell for June, "Potty Training Awareness Month," from parent educator and daycare provider Shelli Hansen with the Idaho Children's Trust Fund.

The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that more child abuse occurs during childrens' toilet training months than at any other developmental stage. Hansen says there's a great deal of pressure on parents, but success only happens when the child wants to make it happen.

"Wait for your child to show the signs of readiness and show an interest. It's important to never use punishment - make it a positive experience, not a negative experience."

One sign of readiness: interest in wearing underwear instead of a diaper. While some parents brag about a child being potty-trained by age two, Hansen says it's a milestone some children just don't reach until between ages three and four. All, she adds, are considered within the normal range of development.

"Kids aren't physically able to tell that they need to use the bathroom until they're at least two-and-a-half years old."

When the potty training process becomes too much of a struggle, Hansen suggests toddlers' parents or caregivers take a break and realize that, biologically, this is a skill children are motivated to master - and they will, when they're ready.
