IL “Sporting” Advice for Insurance Company Blues

Chicago, IL – Study the competition, review referee calls, and take a look at ticket sales. That sports strategy is the basis for advice on purchasing insurance and dealing with claims, according to Illinois Trial Lawyers Association president Flip Corboy. He says the recent report listing the "ten worst" insurance companies was based on customer and state complaints, among other things. So, those having a problem with a company need to make sure the Illinois Division of Insurance knows about it, too.

"File a very strongly-worded letter describing exactly how this insurance company is making your life miserable, despite the fact that you've paid them hard-earned dollars in the form of premiums."

Corboy says the recent report documented industry-wide practices of denying and delaying legitimate claims, and he says that proof may help bring changes that benefit consumers.

"As lawyers we've seen this going on for many, many years, and for the first time in my memory, it's really becoming a discussion at the national level – which is great."

Corboy suggests asking friends and neighbors for their experience with an insurance company, and doing online research about customer satisfaction.

The "ten worst" list was compiled by the American Association of Justice, a trial lawyers' organization, and the insurance industry calls it a "smear campaign" by attorneys.
