MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Popular toy sets based on the CSI TV series are contaminated with asbestos, and people who have the sets are being advised to get them out of their houses. Asbestos has been confirmed to be present in the fingerprint powder included in the "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Fingerprint Examination Kit" and the "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Forensic Lab Kit."

Victoria Ni with the group Public Justice says the organization has filed a class action lawsuit against Planet Toys, the manufacturer of the sets, though the company his filed bankruptcy. Details are available at the Web site www.csitoyssettlement.com.

Ni says the form of asbestos involved is called tremolite.

"All forms of asbestos are dangerous, but tremolite is one of the deadliest forms."

The amount of asbestos in the kits is thought to be very slight, but the toys should be removed from homes. The Web site has complete information about disposing of the kits and about obtaining refunds.

Victoria Ni says consumers have a time window in which they must take action.

"Your claims form has to be received by the claims administrator by January 14, 2010, so you have about six months to get the paperwork in."

The toys were sold in Minnesota by CVS, Toys "R" Us, Hammacher Schlemmer, Walgreens, Amazon.com, Buy.com, Sears, Kmart, and QVC. Customers who purchased the toys will receive refunds from the retailers.
