ST. PAUL, Minn. - Of all days to give in Minnesota this holiday season, today just might be the day. For the next 24 hours, donations made to Minnesota non-profits through GiveMN.org will be matched as part of "Give to the Max Day."

A trio of foundations has set up a half-million dollar fund to match a percentage of all donations given to charities online at GiveMN.org. 100 percent of all donations go directly to the chosen charity. Dana Nelson, the executive director of GiveMN.org, says Minnesotans donated more than $4 billion to charities in 2007.

"Minnesotans have such a wonderful legacy of generosity and giving and now more than ever, with the way the economy has impacted non-profits and individuals across our state, this is a great way to give."

Non-profits such as Hunger Solutions are spreading the word, because the three non-profits that receive donations from the most individual donors will receive cash prizes; $5,000 for first prize, $2,500 for second place and $1,000 for third.

Nelson says "Give to the Max Day" is the first large-scale event of its kind.

"Nobody else has tried this across the country. Our efforts are going to reach the entire state of Minnesota, so again, it's just an exciting initiative for us to be at the forefront of philanthropy."

The site, launched this month, seeks to make giving easier by allowing donors to research more than 36,000 statewide charities and 1.6 million national nonprofits, as well as to donate, track their donations and keep receipts.

The matching gift program on givemn.org ends at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.
