MADISON, Wis. - The dreaded tax date, April 15th, is exactly a month away, and there are some things to keep in mind when you decide who is going to prepare your tax return. Marshall Mennenga of Mennenga Tax and Financial Services, Madison, has a word of caution to those who are looking for help in filling out the forms: Tax preparers are not regulated in Wisconsin.

"Basically, anyone can set up shop and do tax returns and charge a fee."

Mennenga says the person or firm doing your return should not be one that's just around for a few weeks during tax season in the spring. They should be there year-round to support you in case you get a letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The IRS says you should be as careful in selecting a tax preparer as you are in selecting a doctor or lawyer. So how do you decide who you should trust to do your taxes? Mennenga offers an easy way to make a decision.

"The best way to find a tax preparer is to speak to your friends and your co-workers and get referrals. That's absolutely the best way to find a tax preparer."

If you file electronically, you'll get your federal refund in a couple weeks, according to Mennenga. He says Wisconsin is pretty quick to get your money back to you.

"The State of Wisconsin takes actually less than a week if you do a direct deposit, and just over a week if you get the refund through the mail."

By taking a few simple steps to select the right tax preparer, you can get all the deductions you deserve and have your money in the bank pronto, he points out.
