LAS VEGAS - Nevadans looking for ways to save money during tough times may not have to spend hard-earned dollars to get their taxes prepared. Free tax assistance is available for low- and middle-income wage earners across the state.

Gil Yanuck, a retired chief executive officer, has volunteered for the past dozen years with Tax Aide, the free tax-assistance program offered by AARP Nevada. He expects demand to be up this year as folks look for ways to shave costs any way they can.

"And that $150 to $200 that you just saved them, for most of those people, that could be their utility bill, that could be the cost of their prescriptions for the month, or that could be their food. "

The free tax help is available at sites around the state to low- and middle-income wage earners who file schedules E-Z, A and B.

Raphael Tulino, a communications representative with the Internal Revenue Service, says the IRS works with Tax Aide volunteers to be sure they know about the Earned Income Tax Credit, a tax refund for people who don't make a lot of money.

"The average given out is around $2,200-$2,300, and last year in Nevada alone almost $450 million was given away of that credit. The majority of it, about $340 million, was given away in southern Nevada."

Yanuck says Tax Aide volunteers are tested and re-certified every year, and each tax return is double-checked before it is submitted.

"Taxpayers that come to us for our free service can rest pretty easy that, once we're done with their return and it gets accepted, they're not going to have a problem with the IRS."

The toll-free number to find Tax Aide sites is 888-227-7669, and more tax help is available at aarp.org/taxaide.
