“Take Your Money Out of Chase Bank” - Protestors

FREEPORT, N.Y. - A group of angry Long Islanders will withdraw money and close accounts at a branch of J.P. Morgan Chase bank in Freeport today, as part of a protest over the bank's role in the home-foreclosure crisis and its support for a company accused of exploiting workers.

Chase and other banks are under investigation for their foreclosure practices after receiving more than $100 billion in the 2008 TARP bailout.

Charlene Obernauer, executive director of the labor group Long Island Jobs with Justice, says she'll withdraw the funds and close her own personal account as well as the organization's in protest, and urges New Yorkers to follow suit.

"When you get more than $100 billion, we feel it's a company's responsibility to be more lenient on the people who are suffering right now in this country who did not get a bailout."

At its recent annual shareholders meeting, Chase chief executive officer Jamie Dimon told critics of its foreclosure policies, "We are doing everything we can to keep people in their homes that should stay in their homes."

Also withdrawing their money from Chase will be the Village of Hempstead Housing Authority and Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick.

Today's protest is not the first of its kind, Obernauer says, adding that in other communities, protestors have shifted funds to smaller financial institutions.

"I think that this really is catching on. And to me, it's important that we're supporting local banks, that we're supporting federal savings banks, banks that actually support community, community work and community activism."

Obernauer also claims that Chase policies are harmful to workers who pick tobacco leaves in North Carolina for cigarette maker R.J. Reynolds.

"Chase leads a consortium of lenders that provides $500 million to the company, and R.J. Reynolds was voted one of the worst companies by the International Labor Rights Forum in 2010."

After years of pressure, R.J. Reynolds last month agreed to engage in talks with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee, a national labor union representing farmworkers in North Carolina.

Today's demonstration is to start at 2:30 p.m. on the steps of Freeport Village Hall.
