CONCORD, N.H. - The national media has spent much of this week focused on the gun-safety debate that's playing out in the Granite State, and locals this weekend have a chance to discuss ways to take action on that issue and more.

This year's New Hampshire Progressive Summit will be held this weekend at New England College in Henniker. Zandra Rice-Hawkins, executive director of Granite State Progress, said there is little question that gun-violence prevention will be one of the hotter topics.

"We know that there's vast support in New Hampshire for smart gun-violence prevention policy," she said, "so there will actually be a strategy discussion and it's about how do we move this issue forward, help people understand some of the options that Congress is looking at."

The New Hampshire Progressive Summit is billed as a time for Granite State activists to come together to learn, network and inspire one another. In addition to strategy discussions on gun-violence prevention, Rice-Hawkins said, those attending the summit will also get a chance to engage in discussions on the state budget, and a panel will debate proposals to expand gaming in the Granite State.

News media coverage of these issues often leaves people feeling like there is little that can be done, said Mark King, an assistant librarian from Nashua and president of Local 4831 of the American Federation of Teachers. The New Hampshire Progressive Summit offers a sharp contrast, he said, with a real chance for citizens to take action.

"I think in the media you get a two-minute blast of controversy," he said, "In this sort of setting, you have people engaged, all coming together around the issues. That's what our political process in New Hampshire is all about. It's the 21st Century version of it."

The summit will kick off Saturday morning with a keynote address by Michael McCord, author of the forthcoming political satire "The Execution Channel: A Political Fable." The full agenda and registration information is online at NHProgressiveSummit.org.
