SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Students in Illinois are among those nationwide bringing awareness to pressing social concerns as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

About 15 percent of Illinoisans live in poverty, and at Northern Illinois University (NIU), students are exploring the social issues surrounding hunger and homelessness and learning how to get involved, on campus and in their community.

Liz McAllister, a graduate assistant for Community Service and Student Involvement & Leadership Development, organized some of this week's activities and says they help to shed light on the issue.

"Reflection is a big component of a lot of the things that we do,” she explains, “so that we give students not only the opportunity to become aware of what's going on, but also to talk about what that means in their life, and how they can contribute to alleviating hunger and homelessness in their area."

Events at NIU this week included a winter coat drive, a day of fasting and screening documentaries related to childhood homelessness in Rockford.

Students also are helping to pack food for food pantries and to send to hungry children abroad.

Seven hundred high schools, colleges, community and faith-based groups across the nation are taking part in National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week events.

McAllister says the annual observance really opens the eyes of students, who might not have realized hunger and homelessness are happening in their own backyards.

She adds that some are so committed to finding solutions that they end up changing their major to Community Service and Civic Engagement.

"When students get to that point where it's not just volunteering to meet a requirement or get a grade in class, it's something that means something to them,” she says, “they make that switch over to that major – or at least, add that minor to their current study."

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, homelessness has increased in the past few years, and families with children make up the largest and fastest-growing segment of the homeless population.
