Tuesday, December 17, 2013

SANTA FE, N.M. – New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has started a program that will help military veterans get a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Martinez says the Heroes to Highways program will recognize military transportation credentials to help veterans, as well as active-duty, National Guard and Reserve personnel get jobs.

Ernest Doyon, president, New Mexico Veterans Business Advocates, stresses many of today's vets have a hard time finding work because their military experience doesn't always count in the civilian world.

"When they're writing out their resume, they have a problem to say what they did in the military as opposed to what is required in a civilian life," he says.

Under the program, qualified applicants will need only to take the knowledge exam to be issued a CDL.

Doyon says his organization and others like it hold workshops to help veterans improve their job skills.

"How to write a resume,” he explains. “How to get ready for an interview. All these things are sort of foreign to some of these folks because they've never had to do it."

Martinez points out military veterans receive the best training in the world, including how to safely operate heavy military vehicles under extreme conditions.

“We need to recognize these skills by removing redundant and unnecessary requirements that can deny our veterans job opportunities," she says.
