ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexicans are encouraged to consider adding a new member to the family during "Adopt a Shelter Dog Month" in October. Peggy Weigle, executive director with Animal Humane New Mexico says adopting a shelter dog has benefits over going to a breeder, or a retail pet store.

"It's a great deal," says Weigle. "The price you're going to pay for a purebred Labrador Retriever at Animal Humane is probably not going to any more than $100 to $150, and from a breeder, that same dog might cost you $600."

Not only does adopting a shelter dog make good financial sense, but Weigle says it also saves the life of an at-risk animal. All adoption fees go toward caring for other homeless animals. Weigle says her organization is focused on promoting pit bull adoptions in October, and in some cases will waive all adoption fees.

Weigle adds, it seems people are gaining a better understanding of the value in adopting a shelter pet in New Mexico and across the U.S. She says such organizations such as Animal Humane New Mexico also are doing a better job promoting shelter animal adoptions.

"Many of our shelters are doing a better job of helping people understand that 'A,' there are quality pets waiting for homes here and 'B,' the number of animals being euthanized, particularly in New Mexico shelters, I think the number this year is going to be close to 100,000 dogs and cats," she says.

Weigle says Animal Humane New Mexico has about 150 pets currently looking for new homes.
