National Co-Op Month: OR Credit Unions Celebrate Cooperation

PORTLAND, Ore. — October is National Co-Op Month, and among the most popular cooperatives in Oregon are credit unions. The not-for-profit financial institutions boast 2 million members statewide.

Credit unions don't just have a cooperative business model, they also cooperate with each other - a feature that was on display at a joint job fair among nine credit unions in Portland last month.

Gayle Evans is senior vice president for human resources with Unitus Community Credit Union, which hosted the job fair.

"A lot of times, people might think, 'Why would you come together and compete for the same talent all in the same place?' And really, the answer is that the spirit of the credit union movement is cooperative,” Evans said.

She said it's common to see employees at credit unions switch from one to another and even come back to where they started.

There are more than 300 credit union branches across Oregon. Thursday is International Credit Union Day.

Evans noted credits unions, like all cooperatives, are member-owned businesses.

"So when you compare rates and service and the design of our products and services, it really is tailored to our membership rather than some bottom-line profitability or target that has to be met for investors and shareholders,” she said.

Credit unions and other cooperative models began to expand in the wake of the Great Depression.
