Agosto es el Mes Nacional de "Hacer un testamento", y los expertos tienen algunos consejos para ahorrarle a usted, y a sus herederos, tiempo y dinero.

Según Caring.com, solo un tercio de los estadounidenses tienen un testamento o un fideicomiso en vida.

La abogada testamentaria Renee Conrad, de la firma Gilfix y La Poll en Palo Alto, dice que un testamento ayuda a sus herederos a evitar litigios costosos.

"Un tribunal no es el mejor escenario para decidir quién debe manejar sus bienes," dice Conrad. "La corte no conoce a su familia y amigos. Y es mejor no dejar eso en manos del juez, sino que usted realmente se defienda diciendo quien quiere que administre sus bienes en el testamento."

Conrad señala que el proceso de sucesión puede ser costoso y, muchas veces lleva varios meses, tiempo durante el cual se congelan los bienes. Ella advierte a las personas que detallen sus bienes y nombren a un beneficiario y un respaldo, especialmente para las cuentas de jubilación, en caso de que sobreviva al primer beneficiario. Ella agrega que un fideicomiso le permite nombrar a un depositario para que actúe en su nombre si queda incapacitado. Y evita la sucesión.

Sam Young, de la organización sin fines de lucro Compassion & Choices, dice que las personas deben tener una conversación sobre la mortalidad, incluso si es incómodo, e incluso si no tiene muchos bienes.

"La gente no piensa que necesita un testamento porque solo piensa que es para los ricos. Y no es totalmente cierto," explica Young. "Hay muchas situaciones en las que es posible que desee dejar bienes específicos a determinadas personas."

El sitio web FreeWill.com lo ayudará a enumerar sus bienes y deseos finales, con una encuesta que le llevará unos 20 minutos completar. El documento se puede imprimir, firmar y certificar ante un notario.
