Se espera que la próxima semana los legisladores de Kentucky finalicen las regulaciones que han ampliado este año para las prestaciones dentales, oftalmológicas y auditivas para los beneficiarios de Medicaid. Los defensores que trabajan para hacerlas permanentes afirman que un mayor acceso a estos servicios hará que la población de Kentucky esté más sana.

Missy Newland, residente del condado de Jefferson, dice que lleva años padeciendo dolores debido a molares agrietados y a una enfermedad crónica que afecta sus encías. Dice que antes evitaba el tratamiento dental por su costo. Ahora, es más probable que Newland visite al dentista, sabiendo que Medicaid cubrirá la mayor parte de su tratamiento.

"Las regulaciones definitivamente ayudarían a personas como mi mama -personas como yo, personas como mi hermana- que, si no reciben ayuda, están sufriendo," dice Newland.

Alrededor de 900,000 habitantes de Kentucky, principalmente de bajos ingresos, dependen de Medicaid para recibir asistencia médica. Según Kentucky Voices for Health, desde que entraron en vigor las nuevas normas, los habitantes de Kentucky han utilizado sus prestaciones para casi tres mil coronas, dos mil endodoncias y casi seis mil prótesis parciales o completas.

Newland dice que, para quienes las necesitan, carecer de dentadura postiza suele acarrear otros problemas de salud.

"A medida que se les extraen los dientes, van perdiendo su fuente de nutrición," asegura Newland, "porque sus opciones alimentarias son muy limitadas si no tienen dentadura postiza."

Newland añade que las experiencias de sus familiares, que sufrieron problemas de dientes y encías sin tratar, hablan sobre la importancia del acceso a la atención dental.

"Quería dar la cara a esto y que todos supieran que hay seres humanos vinculados a estas leyes que ustedes hacen y a las regulaciones que se dan en la atención médica," concluye Newland.

Más de 68 millones de adultos estadounidenses carecen de seguro dental, según datos publicados esta semana por el CareQuest Institute for Oral Health.
