JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - If you like numbers, working with people and have a little extra time on your hand, AARP Missouri could use your help. The organization offers free tax help to seniors, low-income residents, people with disabilities and those with limited English skills.

Bob Juergens, state coordinator for the AARP Missouri Tax Aide program said they're recruiting volunteers now and they'll start training them around the first of the year.

"We have about 670 or so volunteers in the state of Missouri, and all of our volunteers are trained by IRS-provided materials and certified before we're allowed to do tax returns, and we offer this service every year," he said.

Last year, volunteers prepared and e-filed roughly 40,000 tax returns for people in the state of Missouri.

Juergens said volunteers work with those for whom they're preparing the returns so they understand what's happening during the entire process.

"We go through and prepare the tax return, then we review it with them, and if they're OK with it, say, 'Yes, that represents everything as it should be,' we have them sign it and then we will electronically submit it to the Internal Revenue Service and the state of Missouri for them," he added.

The tax aide program is offered at 117 sites in Missouri including senior citizen centers, libraries, and other locations. It got its start with just four volunteers back in 1968, and now has 35,000 volunteers helping 2.7 million taxpayers across the country each year.
