NH Democrats begin Biden primary write-in campaign

Some New Hampshire Democrats have begun a write-in campaign for President Joe Biden since his name will no longer appear on the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot.

Biden chose to remove his name when the state announced it would maintain its first-in-the-nation primary status despite the national Democratic Party moving the top spot to South Carolina.

Kathleen Sullivan, former chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, said organizers hope to reach as many voters any way they can.

"We don't have any big donors coming in and trying to underwrite the effort," Sullivan emphasized. "It's truly a New Hampshire based, New Hampshire grassroots effort."

Sullivan argued Biden deserves the effort based on his record in office, although the Biden campaign and state Democratic Party are not involved. At least seven GOP candidates will be on the ballot, including former President Donald Trump.

In Biden's absence, a long list of more than twenty Democratic challengers will also be listed, including self-help author Marianne Williamson and Congressman Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who is already running television ads in the state and has pledged to restore New Hampshire's official leadoff primary status.

Sullivan acknowledged Phillips' personal wealth makes the Biden write-in campaign an uphill battle.

"At a time when a lot of people still don't know he won't be on the ballot," Sullivan added. "So, we've got some hard work to do. I think we can pull it off but it's not going to be easy."

New Hampshire election officials say they will need additional help on election night to process a potentially large number of write-ins, and Sullivan hopes it holds true. She contended the fate of democracy itself hangs in the balance.
