ST. LOUIS - National HIV Testing Day today serves as an annual reminder to get tested and encourage others to do the same. As part of the observance, state and county health departments, along with private agencies, are providing free HIV testing.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in every five people living with HIV/AIDS doesn't even know it. When people know their HIV status, they can take steps to protect their health and the health of their partners.

Carolyn Spencer, training and quality assistance coordinator for Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri, says that while those aged 13 to 29 represent over half of all new HIV cases, everyone should get tested.

"It's not always about an age; it's just about an activity. So persons should be tested if they've never ever had a test before. Anyone who's had multiple sexual partners should be tested."

Spencer says Planned Parenthood, along with county and state health departments, is offering free testing for National HIV Testing Day, to ensure that cost is not a barrier. There are currently 11,000 Missourians living with HIV.

Spencer says many doctors now include HIV testing as part of routine medical screenings.

"Doctors are encouraged that that is part of standard routine care that should be done. We've found out that a lot of people are positive, and that has come from just routine testing."

Spencer says HIV testing often involves a simple blood test.
