Oregon Aid Group Feeding Thousands of Flood Victims in Pakistan

July 10, 2007

Oregonians are on the ground in Pakistan helping distribute over 400 tons of food today to victims of severe flooding there. They're part of the Oregon-based humanitarian aid group Mercy Corps' relief efforts in the area. South Asia Program Officer John Stephens says right now they're focusing on immediate relief efforts for about 90,000 people in the area, then they'll turn their efforts to getting people back to work and restoring livelihoods as quickly as possible.

“The economy is relatively intact, it's just a matter of helping people get through this period and perhaps rebuild their house or buy back the tools or cattle that were lost.”

Mercy Corps estimate over two million people were affected by the flooding and some 250,000 have lost their homes.

They're hoping to get the emergency food, utensils and other aid to people as quickly as possible.

“Because the areas hit are so remote and so poor, the flooding really had a tremendous impact on people's lives and livelihoods.”

More information on the relief effort is online at www.mercycorps.org.
