Northwest Group to the Rescue in Kenya

Seattle, WA – Mercy Corps is reaching out to help the troubled African nation of Kenya. The Northwest humanitarian aid group has a disaster relief team on the ground to help some of the 300,000 people displaced by political violence in the past two months. On Sunday, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan left Kenya after working out a power sharing deal to try to stop the fighting. Since the Kenyan president was re-elected in December amid allegations of fraud, more than a thousand people have been killed there.

Michaela Ledesma of the Mercy Corps relief team says it will take months for the Kenyan economy to return to normal.

"Prices of goods have gone way up, even basic things, as well as things like fuel. So people's income is no longer able to stretch the way that it was, even just a few months ago."

Mercy Corps workers have focused on sanitation and clean water to prevent the spread of disease in overcrowded refugee camps. And Kenya grows most of the food for that part of Africa, Ledesma believes it's also important to help farmers get their businesses re-established. She is concerned that if the fragile peace doesn't last, the conflict will threaten those surrounding nations.

"Many Kenyans expressed how they've really been taken by surprise at how the situation unfolded and how it's continuing to unfold. People really want there to be a lasting solution."

Ledesma reports Kenyans are just starting to return to their homes and farms, but many are still in refugee camps, where food is scarce and sanitation is a huge problem. Mercy Corps has programs in four neighboring countries as well.
