Northwest Aid Group Stymied by Gaza Fighting

Seattle, WA – A humanitarian aid organization with offices in Seattle and Portland says it has emergency food and supplies to be distributed in Gaza. At the moment, however, the trucks are sitting in Jerusalem, waiting for the fighting to subside.

Mercy Corps' relief efforts are moving slowly, even as the need grows. Israel's invasion to root out the militant group Hamas from Gaza has killed at least 400 people and injured 2,000 in the past week. The Mercy Corps staff in Gaza had been running job programs to address the unemployment rate of almost 50 percent there, but has now shifted to supplying emergency aid. The problem, says Communications Director Joy Portella, is that it's been difficult to get supply trucks through the border checkpoints.

"It changes day to day, and we're just trying to figure out the best way to get things in, and get goods – food, blankets, medical supplies – to people in need."

Portella says it's been particularly frustrating because nearly 80 percent of the population in Gaza already relies on food assistance. Mercy Corps' four-ton shipment was ready to go when the fighting intensified over the weekend. One of the aid workers described to Portella the situation in her own Gaza household.

"They, like many other families, have no electricity, they have no heat. It is winter there. They don't have much food left. They're living a bare bones existence, and they're hunkered down, unable to leave their house for the most part."

International defense experts believe it will take at least another week for Israel to complete its Gaza offensive, and that it's unlikely pressure from the United States can help achieve a truce. In the meantime, Mercy Corps is updating its Gaza team situation and taking donations for a "Gaza Crisis Fund" on its Web site,
www.mercycorps.org.
