Pakistan's military offensive against the Taliban continues to force people from their homes. More than half a million have been displaced so far. A West Coast relief agency is in the war-torn region distributing emergency supply kits and assessing the situation. Catlin Carlson with Mercy Corps says these families left their homes with almost nothing and are urgently in need of humanitarian aid.

"Local supplies are getting used up, so these people are in desperate need of just basic supplies: food, water, hygiene products, blankets."

The refugees are not expected to be able to return home for at least six months, but many believe it will take several years for the area to recover from the damage caused by the fighting. Mercy Corps has been working in Pakistan for more than 20 years.

Californians wanting to help in the recovery efforts can donate by going to the Mercy Corps website, www.mercycorps.org, or by calling 1-800-852-2100. While many different items are needed, a cash donation will allow the NGO to purchase supply kits that can be assembled on site, Carlson says, which will cut down on shipping costs.

"That also helps the local communities. At this time, the country's economy is getting a huge hit with the violence that's going on, so donations are going to really allow us to be flexible."
